Description

The Laureate Modbus & Serial Output Transmitter & Batch Controller is a powerful, cost-effective workhorse in the form of a 22.5 mm (0.89") thick DIN rail package with removable screw clamp plug connectors. The unit can perform autonomous batch control as instructed by a host computer using the Modbus or Laurel ASCII protocol, and also transmit the current batch total (Item #1), grand total or number of batches (Item #2), and flow rate (Item #3), as well as peak for #3 (rate). All transmitted values are scaled to engineering units of volume or flow with to six-digit resolution.

  • A first solid state relay serves as the batch relay to control repetitive fill operations. It repeats the batch cycles continually with a programmable delay from 10 ms to 199.99 sec, or based on an external control input. The batch total (Item #1) can be set up to count up from zero to a preset limit, or down from a preset limit to zero.

  • A second solid state relay can be assigned to the batch total (Item #1) to serve as a pre-warn to slow down filling near the setpoint, to the grand total or number of batches (Item #2), or to flow rate (Item #3).

Dual-channel signal conditioner board used in Serial ASCII or Modbus Transmitter and Batch ControllerThe dual-channel signal conditioner accepts pulses from all types of turbine flow meters and most industrial transducers with a pulse output such as proximity switches with PNP or NPN output, TTL or CMOS logic, magnetic pickup pulses down to 12 mV, as well as AC inputs up to 250 Vac. Jumper selections provide optimum operation for different sensor types and noise conditions. A built-in 5V, 10V or 24V dc excitation supply can power proximity switches and other sensors, eliminating the need for an external power supply.

LTM Series serial output transmitters send data via an isolated serial port, which is user configurable for RS232 or RS485 and full or half duplex operation. Three protocols are user selectable: Modbus RTU, Modbus ASCII, or Laurel ASCII. Modbus operation is fully compliant with Modbus Over Serial Line Specification V1.0 (2002). The Laurel ASCII protocol allows up to 31 Laureate devices to be addressed on the same RS485 data line. It is simpler than the Modbus protocol and is recommended when all devices are Laureates. It also allows use of Laurel Datalogging Software.

Standard features of Model LTM-BA include:

  • Serial data output, isolated. User selectable RS232 or RS485, half or full duplex, Modbus or Laurel ASCII protocol.
  • Dual solid state relays for control or alarm, isolated. Rated 120 mA at 130 Vac or 170 Vdc.
  • Transducer excitation output, isolated. User selectable 5V@100 mA, 10V@120 mA or 24V@50 mA.
  • Analog transmitter output, 16-bit, user scalable and isolated. User selectable 4-20 mA, 0-20 mA or 0-10V levels.
  • Universal AC power supply for 85-264 Vac.

Easy Transmitter programming is via Laurel's Instrument Setup Software, which runs on a PC under MS Windows. This software can be downloaded from this website at no charge. The required transmitter-to-PC interface cable is available from Laurel (P/N CBL04).

Applications

Drum Filling Application Utilizing Two Relay Outputs

Drum filling batch controller application utilizing two relay outputs In this drum filling application, the Laureate utilizes its two relays to control the pump. The Prewarn relay slows down the pump near the preset to avoid overshoot. The Batch relay stops the pump at the preset.

Controlling the Mixing of Materials

Controlling mixing of materials using two Laureate batch controllers Multiple Laureate batch controllers can be used in combination to control the mixing of materials in the proper ratio. Each feed line is equipped with its own pump, flow meter, and Laureate.

Controller setup and monitoring of the mixing operation are facilitated by Modbus communications, which allow a single data line to handle multiple controllers.

Up-Counting Batch Control

Up-counting batch controller using the Laureate Batch Controller In up-counting batch control, the Laureate counts up from zero to a preset maximum. A prewarn level is available to slow down filling near the preset to avoid overshoot. A time delay can be programmed from the end of each batch to the start of the next batch.

Down-Counting Batch Control

Down-counting batch control using the Laureate Batch Controller In down-counting batch control, the Laureate counts down from the preset maximum to zero. A prewarn level is available to slow down filling or emptying near zero. Again, a time delay can be programmed from the end of each batch to the start of the next batch.

Discrete Filling and Batch Counting

Discrete filling and batch counting using the Laureate Batch Controller The Laureate batch controller is ideal for discrete manufacturing as well as repetitive fill operations. In this example, the Laureate counts bottles which it then groups into sixpacks. Its Grand Total capability can be used to track bottles or sixpacks.
